Coffee products & brands creating a better world
Coffee is an extremely important agricultural and economic resource. It’s produced in approximately 80 countries around the world, with an estimated 125 million people depending on it for their livelihoods. And about 150 million Americans drink 400 million cups of coffee a day, or more than 140 billion cups a year, making the United States the world’s leading consumer of coffee.
But with great popularity also comes great sustainability issues. The volume of single-use cups consumed on a daily basis is a mounting problem, particularly from disposable coffee cups. It’s estimated that the “to-go” coffee culture leads to roughly 60 billion single-use paper cups being thrown away each year in the US alone.
Starbucks, for example, uses more than 8,000 paper cups a minute, which adds up to more than four billion cups a year. And since each cup is lined with plastic, to keep that boiling coffee in check, they aren’t readily recyclable. The only way to truly stem the growing tide of trash, is to change from a habit of convenience to one of conservation.
Luckily there are many coffee and beverage brands willing to go out of their way to drive needed changes. Doing their part to give back and promote a more reusable, responsible coffee culture. From roasters that support social and economic sustainability within coffee farming communities, to producers that donate profits to rescue dogs, there are many heroic coffee brands worth supporting.
